Why NOT To Remove Your Catalytic Converters

If your car has catalytic converters and you want it to be louder, there is typically a resonator and muffler that can be removed (in most states) without an issue.

LEGAL ISSUES

Even in states where they don't do emissions testing, the Clean Air Act still applies federally. On top of this, insurance companies can completely deny your claim if they find out you illegally modified your vehicle by removing the catalytic converter.

In states where emissions testing is performed, it can lead to fines, the loss of registration, and/or barred from selling the vehicle.

NOT WORTH IT

Most catalytic converters are high-flow and don't restrict performance enough to offset the cons.

ENGINE ISSUES

Most oxygen sensors pick up their reading before and after the catalytic converter; removing it causes these oxygen sensors to mistake this for an issue and causes poor fuel economy, among other issues.

NOISE AND SMELL

In most cases, removing the catalytic converter does not achieve the intended exhaust note, typically causing the vehicle to sound metallic or droney. The catalytic converter soaks up a lot of the bad exhaust fumes, so without it, your exhaust can start to smell raw and pugent.

RESALE VALUE

Most people don't want a vehicle with the catalytic converters removed. They are expensive and can be very difficult to install.
